Birdlife at the Yotclub

The Yotclub B&B is situated on the banks of the Grobbelaars River, which is teeming with indigenous birdlife. Over 90 species of birds have been recorded here (75 in a 24-hr sitting), but most prolific are the busy weavers and bishops. Most active in the morning and evening, their calls must be heard to be believed.

Cormorants, ibis, the illlusive Little Bittern, heron and indigenous ducks frequent the banks of the river, and overhead our resident gymnogene, or African Harrier Hawk can often be seen circling lazily above. Birding books and binoculars are available for guest use. VIEW A BIRDING LIST >>

Our cape clawless otters

Frequent visitors to our gardens are a large family of cape clawless otters. Nocturnal, they feast on the crabs and fish that are found at the base of the weir, and their calls and squabbles are often heard late at night and in the early hours of the morning.

Otters in the Grobbelaars River

During winter months, the otters regularly come up higher close to the house, and are often seen feeding during late morning in the river. Otters are beautiful, graceful creatures with a curious nature and we consider ourselves very lucky to have these animals thriving so well on our property.

Please note that otters are wild animals. There is no guarantee that guests will see them as they migrate to feed up and down the river.

Over 60 species of bird have been recorded here
